Thank God for Romans 8! From beginning to end it is food for my soul. I was highlighting favorite verses and turned most of the chapter yellow. Especially today's reading!
v. 22,25 "We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time...But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently."
Crista, I can't help thinking of you as I read these verses. You are hoping for your husband, waiting patiently.
v. 26 promises that help we all need as we wait for God's promises to be fulfilled in our lives. I am waiting for my husband to lead our family into righteousness. To find his place in the Body of Christ again -- to thrive. I know it is God's will for our family. I have confidence that I will live in the promised land with Jim.
v. 26 "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express."
My Bible notes that even when we don't know the right words to pray, the Holy Spirit prays with and for us and God answers. We should ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for us according to God's will. Then we should bring our requests to God and trust Him to do what is best.
I am so glad I am not on my own when I pray. I have a helper and He knows the mind of God.
There is so much more I want to say, but I am tired. See you tomorrow!
Oops - must print out the readings - think I commented on Romans 8 (second half) yesterday - read Romans 9 today. Oh well :-)
Ps. 70 - clearly another bull's eye one (but lopsided!) - the centre is v.4, addressed to God-seekers (us!), saying this: rejoice, be glad, and enjoy God's salvation!
That is all set in the framework of God WILL deliver me, the wicked WILL be punished, and all will be as it should be. Right now, though, I'm still poor, needy, threatened and ridiculed.
That ties in a lot with what you were saying, Deb, from Romans about HOPE.
Psalm 71 isn't a bull's eye one ... I don't think. The Psalmist prays to God from a position of feeling awful and needing delivery. He praises God over and over, and focuses on who God is (rock, fortress, refuge, hope, full of splendour, righteous, giver of salvation, doing of mighty acts and marvellous deeds etc etc.)
When I'm stressed, I need to remember the model given to us in Scripture - like this very Psalm. In fact, I just got off the phone from a stressful conversation with my sister ... nothing major ... but it was after a ridiculously busy day and after several nights without enough sleep, and she was pushing for me to make a decision that she then didn't agree with anyhow etc etc etc. Did I turn to praising God for who He is etc? No, I grumbled and held a mini-pity-party. (More just a cup of tea, really.) Forgive me, Lord. Now as I type, I'm taking a moment to focus on who He is.
I love vv. 14-15. "But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all day long, though I know not its measure."
I was also struck by the blessing of a Christian upbringing (v.17 - "Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day, I declare your marvelous deeds.") That's what you're giving your children, friends! Crista, be affirmed in your comment recently about making 'being mommy' a high priority!
Now, Debbie dear, I'm following your good example re. sleep......
